Empowering Youth in Kigali: The SILC Communities and AJECL Association Initiative

The Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation is dedicated to empowering Kigali youths by supporting entrepreneurial growth and economic self-reliance.

In the district of Nyarugenge, located in the heart of Rwanda's capital, Kigali, the issue of youth unemployment looms large. To tackle this challenge, innovative solutions like the Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC) and the Association des Jeunes De Saint Charles Lwanga (AJECL) have emerged, offering a beacon of hope and a pathway to economic empowerment for many young people.
Since its inception in October 2004 by Abbe Theogene Iyaremye and a group of dedicated young individuals from the Nyamirambo parish, AJECL has been committed to the sustainable socio-economic empowerment of marginalized communities, with a special focus on the youth. This mission is now more critical than ever, as Nyarugenge faces high unemployment rates that hinder economic growth and contribute to social unrest.

Strengthening Entrepreneurial Capacities
To address these challenges, AJECL, in partnership with the Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation, is working to strengthen the entrepreneurial and organizational capacities of 12 SILC communities in Nyarugenge. This initiative is crucial for creating a sustainable pathway for unemployed youth to become economically active and self-reliant.

Many young people in Nyarugenge face significant obstacles in accessing formal loans, including a lack of collateral, limited knowledge about available credit products, high costs of credit applications, and geographical barriers to accessing banking services. Moreover, there is often a gap in understanding business plan development, financial literacy, and project management. In response, the project offers a self-help alternative through the creation of SILCs and other initiatives to organize savings and credit among community members.

These efforts are not only generating employment opportunities but also fostering a culture of innovation, resilience, and collaboration within the communities. With the financial support of the Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation until 2025, the initiative aims to see Nyarugenge District experience positive social and economic transformations, with youth leading the change.

A Vision for the Future

Addressing youth unemployment in Nyarugenge District requires a holistic approach that includes capacity building, resource access, and a supportive ecosystem. By investing in the entrepreneurial and organizational capacities of SILC communities, AJECL is paving the way for young people to embark on entrepreneurial journeys, unlock their potential, and contribute to their socio-economic growth.

With continued efforts and collaboration, AJECL and its partners are not only empowering communities and transforming lives but also building a brighter future for the youth in Nyarugenge. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community-driven solutions in overcoming challenges and fostering sustainable development.
